Apple Chief Executive Steven P. Jobs showed off his company’s new version of the iPhone in San Francisco this morning that runs on faster wireless networks and offers a host of new games and Web services. The new device, which still go on sale July 11, will cost $199 for the cheaper 8-gigabyte model and $299 for the 16-gigabyte model. (The original iPhone was launched less than a year ago at $599.)

Mr. Jobs also demonstrated a bunch of new applications for the device, including games, news and a Mobile Me platform that will synchronize the phone’s information with the user’s other computers via the wireless Internet.

Below is the live blog I wrote from the event, with the most recent material at the top. My colleague Saul Hansell in New York has written a related post on Apple’s bid to charge for services that others offer for free and another post on the important new tools Apple is giving independent iPhone software developers.

2:51 p.m. EDT|: That’s it. No classic “one more thing” from Mr. Jobs, followed by another big surprise.

A map of the countries, in red, that will carry the Apple 3G iPhone. (Credit: John G. Mabanglo/European Pressphoto Agency)

2:47 p.m. EDT| Huge Price Cut: New Phone for $199:While the tune “It’s a Small World” played over and over, Mr. Jobs displayed on a map the 70 countries that will have (official) iPhone 3G distribution. But China, India and Russia are not among them.

What’s left? The price.

The 3G will sell for $199 for 8 gigabyte model; $299 for the 16 gigabyte model. Available July 11 at the same price around the world.

2:40 p.m. EDT| Details of 3G Phone: “We need to sell iPhones in many more countries,” said Mr. Jobs. “We need to make it more affordable.” Mr. Jobs said the No. 1 reason more people don’t buy it because it costs too much.

The “iPhone 3G” is being introduced. Thinner at the edge, a plastic back, 3.5 inch-display, a camera, a flush headphone jack.

Mr. Jobs demonstrated how much faster the 3G phone is compared to the old EDGE network the first generation used: 21 seconds versus 59 seconds to load a graphics-rich Web site.

The speeds are approaching Wi-Fi, he said — “amazingly zippy.” He said it is faster than a Nokia N95 or a Treo 750.

What about battery life? Five hours for talking using the 3G nework, said Mr. Jobs. For audio playback, it lasts 24 hours.

G.P.S. is built into the new iPhone.

“We can actually do tracking,” he said. He showed how the phone’s map can track a person driving down curvy Lombard Street in San Francisco.

2:33 p.m. EDT| Faster Data Service: “This is the phone that changed phones forever,” said Mr. Jobs. He said 80 percent of users are using ten features or more on the iPhone.

Apple sold 6 million iPhones until supplies ran out, he said.

The new phone will run on 3G network, which provide much faster data service than the old iPhone’s 2G network.

2:27 p.m. EDT| Mobile Me:This is a server in the cloud that pushes e-mail, contacts and calendars right to the iPhone, like Microsoft Exchange does for enterprise desktops. Nothing that radical.

If a meeting is changed, Mobile Me’s servers update the calendar over the air. It will work for PC users using Microsoft Outlook. A new contact is added on the phone and the contact is updated on a computer also connected to the service. (The Web address is me.com and, as Saul Hansell had reported last week, is a replacement for Apple’s .mac service.)

Apple’s slogan for Mobile Me is “Exchange — for the rest of us.” The price of the service is $99 a year.

“We’ve been working on that for a while,” said Mr. Jobs. “We think we got it right.”

My colleague John Markoff is more impressed than I am by Mobile Me. He says it’s a “slam dunk” that will threaten Google’s Gmail service.

2:17 p.m. EDT| Rules for New iPhone Applications:

Developers set the price and keep 70 percent of the revenue, Mr.Jobs said.

Free apps will be available on the Apple applications store for free. Apple isn’t taking a commission.

Big apps will be downloaded through a computer.

Microsoft is celebrating the release of a new version of one of its most successful products outside of the desktop Windows and Office one-two punch.

Windows Server 2008, which is being feted in a series of launch events starting in Los Angeles today, is the flagship product of Microsoft’s long-term effort to build a presence in the lucrative market for software that businesses run behind the scenes.

The part of the company that built the product, the Server and Tools unit, brought in sales of about $11.2 billion in the past fiscal year, more than one-fifth of Microsoft’s total. It was very profitable, too, forming the third leg of the stool with Windows and Office.

Windows Server 2008, along with a set of programming tools called Visual Studio 2008 and database software SQL Server 2008, “will underpin growth from the Server and Tools business over the next several years,” Microsoft Chief Financial Officer Chris Liddell said last month.

Microsoft launched its first server software 15 years ago. And while the venture has been successful — the business just chalked up its 22nd straight quarter of double-digit sales growth — the company does not enjoy the dominance it does on the desktop, which raises the stakes for each new server release.

Server software is the foundation layer for the workhorses of the information-technology world. The software controls powerful back-end server computers that run enterprise applications, networks, Web sites, e-mail and data centers.

Server sales last year, including hardware, reached $54.4 billion globally, the second-highest level on record after $61.6 billion in 2000, according to data being released today from market-tracking firm IDC.

Market “unforgiving”

Windows Server 2008 replaces the 2003 version and relies on much of the same code base as Windows Vista, the desktop operating system Microsoft released broadly just over a year ago.

Vista has disappointed some users because it didn’t work well with some older applications and hardware — issues Microsoft has acknowledged and sought to address.

“Microsoft can’t afford to have those incompatibility issues plague Windows Server 2008 as they have with Vista,” said Laura DiDio, an analyst with the Yankee Group. “The market is very unforgiving. … If there’s one big bug or flaw, it will be magnified. That’s just the way it is.”

IT departments, many of which already run a combination of Microsoft and competing technology, can choose from vendors including Red Hat, Novell, Sun Microsystems, IBM and others. Also, as with many Microsoft products, Windows Server 2008 will compete with earlier versions of the software that are working just fine.

Microsoft claimed 36.6 percent of the server market, by revenue, in the fourth quarter of 2007, IDC reported. Unix servers had 33.3 percent and Linux claimed 12.7 percent.

Bill Hilf, general manager of Windows Server marketing and platform strategy, said Server 2008 is already well ahead of its predecessor in terms of application compatibility.

“Certainly, we have learned a lot from Vista about what happens when the applications aren’t ready,” he said.

Sharing code

Today, 80 software vendors have applications ready to go on Server 2008 compared with 13 when Server 2003 launched.

Also, there are many more applications and devices that a desktop operating system must support compared with a server operating system, Hilf said, so compatibility is less of a challenge in the first place.

With each release, Microsoft is expected to make improvements in speed, security, reliability and other fundamental attributes of an operating system.

Hilf said there are advantages to having both Vista and Server 2008 share code, a pitch Microsoft will continue to make as it uses Server 2008 to drive adoption of Vista and vice versa.

Redesigned networking technology in both products leads to “radically faster” file sharing — one of the most common actions between the desktop and the server, he said.

Another feature, called Network Access Protection, essentially performs a “health check” each time a computer connects to a corporate network. This process includes scanning for viruses and ensuring security software is up to date.

Michael Cherry, an analyst at Kirkland-based Directions on Microsoft, said IT professionals will be attracted by a “core installation” option for Server 2008 in which all but the essential pieces of the system are stripped away.

“This allows an organization to only install the smallest amount of Windows that is necessary to run a task,” Cherry said. That’s important because it minimizes the amount of code hackers can attack or that needs patching when Microsoft issues updates.

Morale booster

Based on early feedback from test versions, the product “appears to be far more stable and reliable than Vista,” Cherry said.

But the true test comes when it becomes broadly available.

Said DiDio, “Once it’s actually out there in gold code and they do that launch, the gloves really come off.”

In addition to the marketing function a product launch serves, it’s a meaningful day for Microsoft employees.

It’s hard to get an exact number for how many people worked on Windows Server because various teams contribute pieces to multiple products. Hilf, whose responsibilities include approving launch-related expenses, said he saw an invoice for more than 5,000 “Ship It” awards — trophies that recognize Microsoft employees for their work on a completed product.

Windows 7 (previously codenamed Blackcomb and Vienna) is scheduled to be the next major version of Microsoft Windows, expected to be the successor of Windows Vista. Microsoft has announced that it is “scoping Windows 7 development to a three-year timeframe”, and that “the specific release date will ultimately be determined by meeting the quality bar.” The client versions of Windows 7 will ship in both 32-bit and 64-bit versions, even though the server counterpart (which will succeed Windows Server 2008) will be exclusively 64-bit.

Microsoft is maintaining a policy of silence concerning discussion of plans and aspirations for Windows 7 as they focus on the release and marketing of Windows Vista, stating that Microsoft doesn’t want to promise features and then fail to deliver, though some early details of various core operating system features have emerged. As a result, little is known about the feature set, though public presentations from company officials have disseminated information about some features. Leaked information from people to whom M1 of Windows 7 was shipped also provide some insight into the feature set.

Security experts have warned internet users to beware of new worms exploiting this year’s Valentine’s Day.

Panda Security has identified the worms as Nuwar.OL and Valentin.E.

“Year after year we see several malware strains that use Valentine’s Day as bait to attract users,” said Luis Corrons, technical director of Panda Labs.

“This indicates that cyber-crooks are still reaping the benefits of this technique and many people still fall into the trap.”

Nuwar.OL reaches computers by email with subjects like ‘I Love You Soo Much,’ ‘Inside My Heart’ or ‘You In My Dreams.’

The body of the email includes a link to a site that downloads the malicious code. The page is very simple and looks like a romantic greeting card with a large pink heart.

Once it has infected a computer, the worm sends out a large number of emails to the user’s contacts in order to spread. This also creates a heavy load on networks and slows down the computer.

Valentin.E is very similar, using subjects like ‘Searching for True Love’ or ‘True Love’ and containing an attached file called ‘friends4u’.

A copy of the worm is downloaded and installed on the computer as a file with the .scr extension if the targeted user opens the file.

Valentin.E shows a new desktop background to trick the user, while making several copies of itself. Finally, the worm sends out emails from the infected computer to spread and infect more users.

“Both cases are clear examples of social engineering techniques to spread malware,” said Corrons.

“They use attractive subjects, such as Valentine’s Day greeting cards, romantic desktop themes etc, to entice users to run attachments or click links that ultimately download malware.”

Bangalore: In the midst of the buzz about Chandrayaan, the moon mission, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is planning to launch a satellite to study the sun.

‘Aditya’ should be up in space by 2012 to study the dynamic solar corona, the outermost region of the sun. This fiery region has temperatures of over one million degrees, with raging solar winds that reach a velocity of up to 1000 km a second. The satellite will carry as its payload an advanced solar coronagraph.

“Aditya will be a small satellite weighing 100 kg, placed most likely in a near-earth orbit of 600 km,” said G. Madhavan Nair, Chairman, ISRO. “The satellite is intended to study one of the most fundamental problems of coronal heating, and other phenomena that take place in the magnetosphere. “This will be one of the first projects scheduled in a road map formulated by the Advisory Committee for Space Research, said Mr. Nair.

Beyond being a research exercise, Aditya has a unique practical application: to protect ISRO’s satellites from the vagaries of solar phenomena, said R. Sridharan, Programme Director, Space Science Office, ISRO.

A satellite image of the sun and the solar corona.

“The sun’s corona is highly active, releasing energy during solar flares in the form of bursts — manifesting as geomagnetic storms on earth. These associated charged particles can distort the earth’s magnetic field, and have a huge bearing on near-earth space where our satellites are located,” he explained.

The launch of Aditya will coincide with a ‘solar maximum’ a phase of high solar dynamism, which will occur in 2012, said Prof. Sridharan.

“The sun goes through an 11-year cycle of activity — we crossed the solar minimum in 2006,” he said. The coronagraph will study the solar corona through an artificial eclipse that will prevent sunlight from directly entering the instrument, revealing to the telescope only the halo of the corona.

The advisory committee has constituted a national-level study group to work out the optimum configuration for the coronagraph, among other parameters.

The study group comprises individuals from the ISRO Satellite Centre, Udaipur Solar Observatory, Indian Institute of Astrophysics, Radio Astronomy Centre, National Centre for Radio Astrophysics, and several universities, said Prof. Sridharan. Their report will be out by May, and the project finalised by the end of 2008, he added. The projected cost of the satellite is approximately Rs. 50 crore.

“We want to cut costs by avoiding a dedicated launch. With ISRO’s multiple launching capability, Aditya could go as a co-passenger in one of the many launches scheduled for the next four years,” said Prof. Sridharan. “The cost of the instrument can also be reduced by nearly a factor of 10 by using screened industrial grade components. We do not need this satellite for more than two years — it would have gathered an enormous amount of data in this span of time.”

LONDON: Security experts are urging internet users to be alert against a stealthy Windows virus that can steal login details for online bank accounts.

About 5,000 machines, most of which were from Europe, were found to be infected by the malicious program between 12 December and 7 January.

The experts say that it is via booby-trapped websites — which use vulnerabilities in Microsoft’s browser to install the attack code — that many people fall victim to this virus.

Since the virus has the ability to bury itself deep inside Windows, it is hard to detect it.

It tries to overwrite part of a computer’s hard drive called the Master Boot Record (MBR). When a computer is switched on, it scans the same portion for information about the operating system it will be running.

Upon installation, the virus called Mebroot usually downloads other malicious programs like keyloggers to steal confidential information.

“If you can control the MBR, you can control the operating system and therefore the computer it resides on,” told Elia Florio.

He pointed out that most of the viruses dating from the days before Windows used the Master Boot Record to get a grip on a computer. They lie in wait on a machine until its owner logs in to the online banking systems of one of more than 900 financial institutions.

Mebroot has been written by a Russian virus-writing group, which specialises in stealing bank login information.

Security firm iDefense said that Mebroot was discovered in October, but it was used in a series of attacks in early December.

Computers running Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2003 and Windows 2000 that are not fully patched are all vulnerable to the virus. Mebroot cannot be removed while a computer is running.

Thompson Financial reports today that in an interview with a German newspaper, Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Microsoft’s chairman said he did not intend to make a combination cell phone/music player.
